A new approach to the Law

I am the founder of AdviceNet. I qualified as a Solicitor in England in 1986, and in my early years I became more and more convinced that something was terribly wrong with the system. Far too many lawyers would all too frequently take a simple job and make it seem very complicated so they could charge more; molehills were regularly turned into mountains; and very vulnerable clients, in divorce cases for example, were habitually exploited by being shoved down the road of litigation, and the months (or years) of anguish that goes with it, with total disregard to the effect on those involved (especially children), and when a wise word or two at the outset would resolve things so much easier.

So I resolved to do something about it. For a few years I specialised in presenting claims against lawyers for malpractice on behalf of their victims. I still do a bit of that now. But it is not enough. Why wait for somebody to become a victim, and then help them get redress; why not try to stop anybody becoming a victim in the first place? That is the thought that inspired this website.

On this site I hope to lay bare the parts of the system that the worst of the insiders would prefer you not to know about. Like how easy it is to get a divorce for yourself and save a fortune in legal fees, or how the legal process of buying or selling a house works, and so on.

This site is not designed to turn you into a lawyer overnight. Being a lawyer is a highly skilled business, and a status that takes many years of study and training to attain. Not every legal problem is one that the non-lawyer would be wise to handle himself; but then again nor is every car repair, and that does not stop most people having a tinker under the bonnet every now and again to save money! In both cases you can always call in the experts whenever you wish.

This web site is a sort of layman's manual of what lawyers get up to, and how they do what they do. Sometimes it may inspire you to have a go yourself; if so, you can use this site to get lawyers who you can call in to assist if you get stuck, and who will not be snobby and offended by your attempt to do 'their job' for them.

Even if you prefer not to dabble yourself, this site will enable you to understand what is going on rather better than you might otherwise. And it will enable you to get hold of a lawyer who you can trust to assist you without indulging in any of the abuses I mentioned above.

A lawyer is the best source for advice in a much wider range of situations that most people imagine, and need not cost as much as you fear either. He has many years' training and his advice is dispassionate and objective and cushioned by nothing except your interests alone. Use him wisely, and avoid the bad apples by using this site, and you will never have a better or more professional or trustworthy advisor.
